Matiu/Somes Island (2010)

In 2010 I worked closely with the Department of Conversation to record the memories of people who worked and lived on Matiu/Somes Island in Wellington harbour.

The island was designated New Zealand's first animal quarantine station in 1889. Animals arriving in New Zealand from other countries were quarantined on the island for 30-60 days to check they were free of disease.

In 2010 a reunion was held on the island. Over two days I was able to walk around the remaining structures and chat with people about their memories of working on the station. At a later stage these recordings will be edited and uploaded into listening posts, so that visitors can hear first-hand accounts of what it was like.
