AIDS Memorial Quilt (2010)

The New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt started with its first panel in 1988 and first display in 1991. Today some of the older blocks are starting to show a few signs of wear. In an effort to help preserve the panels that make up the quilt I helped photograph all of the panels in mid-2010.

The New Zealand quilt is made up of sixteen blocks (eight panels each) and eleven individual panels. One of the issues we immediately encountered was how to take high resolution photographs of such large objects (each block measures 12 feet by 12 feet). We quickly came up with the idea to photograph each panel seperately and then stitch them together in the computer.

The high-resolution panel images are now available for download at aidsquilt.org.nz

One of the other exciting results of this work was the quilt oral history project that I undertook.
